Cozy Mystery Book Review: The Raven Thief

The Raven Thief

Donald Jay's Cozy Review:

Five stars and two thumbs way up for Gigi Pandian’s The Raven Thief. As a former magician myself, I congratulate Pandian for getting the magic right with her protagonist; a magician turned amateur sleuth, Tempest Raj. Pandian’s rich knowledge of and appreciation for the history of the mystery genre is evident throughout the story. I have yet to read one of her books without adding one of the classics she has referenced to my to-be-read list.

Not your typical locked room murder mystery, in this puzzler, the body appears, not only in a locked room but on a table surrounded by an unbroken circle of friends holding hands. If that wasn’t baffling enough, Pandian teases the reader with three other impossibilities surrounding the murder. She creates a mysterious and magical setting through the use of marvelous devices like hidden staircases, a smuggler’s nook, and a secret garden. A family curse adds layers to this already twist-filled mystery creating a puzzle, a world, and characters that kept this reader spellbound until the end.
