Sir Rowland Hill proposed the world’s first adhesive postage stamp, known as the Penny Black, in the United Kingdom in 1840. This innovation introduced prepayment of postage for letters up to ½ ounce to be delivered anywhere, regardless of distance. Prior to this, it was normal for the recipient (not the sender) to pay the postage of a letter upon delivery. The postage rate was calculated by the sheet and based partially on the distance traveled.*
The Dickens Station Victorian Era Museum is a collection of museum displays open to the public throughout Dickens Station. Most of the original buildings, relocated from London by Merritt Otto Dickens in 1893, and many other businesses offer a museum display of their trade in Victorian England, 1820 to 1941. The Post Office display is located inside the Train Station.
