The Game:
Okay mystery lovers. Let’s play a little game to see how well all those mysteries you have read have sharpened your powers of observation.
Here’s how to play:
- Read the backstory below (Optional) or skip to step 2.
- Solve the jigsaw puzzle to reveal the image or, if you don’t like jigsaw puzzles, view the Image Reveal Page.
- Leave a comment below or on Facebook at DonaldJayAuthor or in your favorite Facebook mystery group reporting:
- How long it took you to solve the jigsaw puzzle (if you tried) and
- How many (a number) clues about the suspect you deduced from the image.
But please Don’t Spill The Tea! Please do NOT put actual clues in your comments just yet. That comes later.
Follow the post because tomorrow, after everyone has had a chance to play, I will open it up for you amateur sleuths to share specific clues and will share the ones I found (there may be up to nine clues).
Link to the puzzle on JigsawPlanet.com.
Hint: You may want to read the backstory below first for additional information, but this is optional.
The Backstory (Optional):
Here’s a little backstory to spice things up, if you like, but you can play without reading this.
You are Dianna Mattson, Dickens Station’s version of Jessica Fletcher. An international antiques thief has been traced to a room at The Inn at Dickens Station. The FBI has asked Chief Constable Peeler to arrest the suspect and to secure the room and its contents until they can arrive. Knowing your interest in such matters, Peeler invites you to tag along. When you, Peeler, and his men arrive, you meet the housekeeper retrieving linens from her cart, which is blocking the door to the room. The suspect has checked out, and the room has been cleaned. While Peeler and his men search the room for clues, you wait outside and, knowing that housekeepers see everything, you act clueless and ask the housekeeper if she knows what is going on.
She tells you she had never met the occupant but commented that he or she must have been an antique enthusiast. She tells you about an exquisite tea service in a box that the guest actually used one morning earlier in the week. She shows you a picture on her phone that she had taken of the teacup, planning to look it up on the internet to see how much it was worth.
Your mission: Complete the jigsaw puzzle and then tell me how many clues you can discern from the image.
Remember, Don’t Spill The Tea (just yet). Comment ONLY with the time it took you to complete the puzzle and how many (a number) of clues you have discerned. I came up with nine possibilities. I’ll ask you to share your specific clues tomorrow after everyone has had a chance to play. Please do not include specific clues in your comments yet.

I thought I was moving them pretty quickly, but it kept grabbing the wrong piece, over/under. 6:08. Oh, well.
Donald Jay says:
I think that’s still a pretty good time. Given your skill at details, I expect you’ll have most, if not all, of the clues upon reveal.
Dianna says:
I was away and just got to this. I love the addition of the jigsaw puzzle! I have to admit I’m not a good detective, but I did solve the jigsaw puzzle. 🙂 So fun!!!
Donald Jay says:
With your love of escape rooms and mystery parties, I don’t believe for a second that you are not a good detective!
Dianna says:
Haha well I’m better than some…but no match for you for sure!
