What are your favorite first lines from cozy mysteries? When did a single line, or hook in an opening chapter, grab you and compel you to keep reading?
Many writing gurus insist that a writer must capture the reader’s interest with the first line if they ever hope to hold their attention for longer than the first chapter.
For me, one of the best examples of a brilliant opening line is “Look out! The wombats are loose again!” from The Twelve Jays of Christmas by Donna Andrews. When I read that line, I was hooked. It set the tone for the entire book, and it so captured my imagination that I had to keep reading.
How about you? What memorable first lines from cozy mysteries, or any book, come fondly to mind as one that grabbed your attention?
